Steeped in mountaineering and skiing tradition, the ancient town center
of Chamonix is in a narrow valley, with towering peaks and glaciers rising
almost vertically on each side. Chamonix is a Mecca for advanced skiers who
spend their time in the vast expanses of challenging off-piste (out of bounds) terrain. The Vallee Blanche, a classic off-piste route is great for
intermediate skiers and La Tour is an ideal place for first time and novice
skiers. The areas lift pass covers 14 resorts with over 200 lifts and 500 miles
of runs. Chamonix is the ideal destination for all levels of skiers as well as
non-skiing companions who may want to sightsee, shop, or just relax in the
gorgeous village. Side trips to Geneva, Italy, or even Paris can be arranged for
the day or an extended stay.
The Chamonix valley cuts
deeply through Europe's highest mountains and glaciers. The views are stunning
and the runs are everything really tough runs should be - not only steep, but
high and long. If you like manicured slopes accessed by slick lifts, stick to
the Trois Vallées. If you like your snow and scenery on the wild side, give
Chamonix a try.
